An earthquake of magnitude 5.6 struck the Colombian capital on 24 May 2008. 3 people were killed when an avalanche crushed their car and 3 more died in landslides. The quake blocked a highway and flattened 10 houses and a church. A government building was also evacuated after a shower of bricks tumbled off one of its walls.

The quake started around 2.20 p.m. It struck at a depth of 6 miles and only lasted for 40 seconds. A small number of aftershocks were felt over the next hour.

Many people ran on to the streets of Bogota during the time of the earthquake fearing that it would collapse. Calls to the officials were unanswered as phone systems were down.

President Alvaro Uribe ordered all the officials to assess the damage quickly "to learn how to help the community."

I think that all countries should always have a evacuation plan ready to minimize damages from any natural disasters, and teach the citizens what to do during the disaster for them to prepared for the disaster.
